Live, Laugh and Love: Journal Flowers Stencil by Catherine Scanlon

Hello everyone, Catherine Scanlon back again for my last Guest Designer post for eclectic Paperie -- first I want to mention that Kim now has my stamps and stencil in the store, you can find them here.

For the art journal page I'm sharing today I used the 9 x 12 Journal Flowers Stencil and the Clear Stencil Alphabet.

 

I really love this stencil and the fun things that can be created with it. This particular stencil was inspired by a piece of art I created in one my classes over at My Creative Classroom and the stamps -- well they just make me happy! I've been using the plastic lettering templates for years to help me with my hand writing and having them as stamps is another way I can get amazing looks on my art journal pages, cards and any project I need a block alphabet for.

To create this art journal page I used Liquitex Black Spray Paint with the stencil on mixed media paper. Then I used the stencil as a template to cut some scraps of patterned papers and glued them in place here and there -- but I left the two center flowers black so I could add some stamping and journaling with white ink and pen.

For color I used my watercolor palette, watercolor crayons and distress paint to get some beautiful colors. The white around the edge of the flowers is a White Faber Castell Marker. I sanded the black flowers ever so slightly to give the black spray paint a bit of a distressed look before I added the stamping and journaling. The journaling was written using a white Gelli Pen from Sakura.

There you have it, a simple yet colorful and balanced art journal page to add to my stash of pages I've created with my stamps and stencils. I love the way this turned out.

New Goodies = Playtime!!!

I just got a pile of new goodies from 

the eclectic Paperie online store

and couldn't wait to try them out!

I was excited to try out every single thing I got so I just ripped out a piece of ledger paper from my Great Aunt Sandy's grade- keeping book from the class she taught in 1958 and got started!

And I know you are all jealous of my ledger paper so here are a couple of pictures of that too! -Yes, 1958!!

I tried out every color of the new Wendy Vecchi line of Ranger Archival inks - they're so yummy! Her new background stamps "Vintage Mesh" and "Reverse Dots" are fabulous too! Of course I had to use my favorite Unity Stamp Co. "She Script" stamp as well! The Prima "Riley" Stamp is precious, her hair is colored with various Faber Castell India Ink Markers topped off with Silks Acrylic Glaze in "Ginger Peach". Her dress is stamped with the "Reverse Dots" stamp in "Cornflower Blue" topped off with Silks Acrylic Glaze in "Sky Blue". The gorgeous Silks glazes add just the right amount of sheer shimmer - so pretty.

Stencils used are: Balzer Bits "Number Bits", Wendy Vecchi Stencils for Art "3 Flourishes", The Crafters Workshop "Mini Climbing Vine". On the top right corner I used Wendy Vecchi Gold Metallic Embossing Paste through the Christy Tomlinson "Vintage Lace Mask". The ferns at the bottom are White Embossing Paste applied through The Crafters Workshop "Mini Four Ferns" stencil.

Rub-ons used are Christy Tomlinson "Doodle Flowers" and Idea-ology Remnant Rubs "Words" and "Numbers".  I'm just kicking myself because I was going to use white doodle flower rub-ons under the black words in the center of the piece and I forgot - believe me, it looks cool when you do this so try it out! 

 I'm not sure what will become of this piece but  I sure had fun trying out my new stuff!

I hope you are inspired to get inky - if you don't have Wendy Vecchi's new line of Ranger Archival inks, you NEED them (just sayin')!

My World

Hello it's Sue here and today I'm sharing a journal page that was initially inspired by a YouTube video of Dyan Reaveley demonstrating her Dylusions sprays. I say initially as the page took a totally different path than I was aiming for !

I sprayed the page first of all with White Linen  then I drew the circles using the spray mechanism from the sprays using various colours. Now in Dyan's video the colours wicked out beautifully BUT on my page the ink stayed exactly where it was ! The paper in my journal is really absorbent, I have discovered, so not a good surface for this technique.

So then I decided to spray the page and discovered that the colours were alot more muted than they should be, and were almost pastel. I used Melted Chocolate and it changed to a mauve colour !

I then used the Fleur de Lis stencil with acrylic paint and I was starting to like things a lot better now I had some colour on the page.  I also used the Mini Numbers and Mini Art Is stencils using some more acrylic paint.

I added a little further stencilling with the Mini Vine stencil and then stamped with the Grungy Circles stamp and Cornflower Blue Archival ink.

I originally stencilled the Mini Silhouette straight on to my page but it didn't stand out enough. So, I stencilled it onto some white card, using acrylic paints. I then drew around the edge with a black pen and cut it out. To cover the white edges I rubbed some Black Soot Distress Ink all around them.

The letters are from the Tim Holtz Alphabet Soup and I've painted them with acrylic paint and then brushed metallic wax around the edges.

The words are stamped with one of those cheap little alphabet stamp sets and I've rubbed some Distress Ink around the edges.

Graphic 45 - Typography!

Good morning!  Sherry here with you today and I have a quick wall hanging to share.
The wall hanging is made from chipboard and uses the Typography Collection from Graphic 45.

I started by cutting 3 pieces of chipboard 5x7” each and then 3 other pieces slightly smaller.



Each sized piece of chipboard was glued together to make one panel.  This makes the wall hanging sturdier than if you only used one piece and it doesn’t bow or bend.



A coordinating piece from the collection was cut to match the chipboard and once covered, they were glued together. 

The sentiment panel is from the Typography Collection.  One (edged in blue) was mounted on chipboard and then trimmed down.  The top was also mounted on chipboard and trimmed smaller.  It was mounted over the bottom using foam mounting tape.



Another piece of the collection was also glued to chipboard and then cut out as a frame for the sentiment.

All the edges of each individual piece were sponged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

How Many Layers is Enough???

In my case, it's never enough!  Or more accurately when is an art journal page ever completely finished?  Hi folks, Micki here to share another art journal page that has been reworked numerous times.  I think this last layer is layer number 11.
A little history about the evolution of this page.  It started months ago with scraps of paper pieces and washi tape glued to the page, then covered with black gesso because I thought about using Dylusions Walk in the Park stamp set.  Well, as you can see below that idea didn't quite turn out as I had expected.

Using a brayer, I added a layer of gesso, then several more layers of paint. At one point I pulled out all of my stencils and just added a bunch of layers of different stencils.  Now keep in mind that my craft room is right off the kitchen so I would wander in there while waiting for water to boil or for the coffee to brew....so these layers were created over a period of weeks.

After each layer, I added paint with my brayer.   The page just wasn't "speaking" to me, either the color of paint or the combination of stencils just didn't look right. I gave the whole page a light layer of Olive Vine Silks Acrylics Glaze, still wasn't happy with it. I finally added a thin layer of white gesso (again using my brayer and decided enough was enough and added the Three Quarter Face stencil from The Crafter's Workshop using Claudine Hellmuth's Charcoal Black Studio paint.

Several days later I came back to fill in her hair using watered down paint, then I colored in her face using a mixture of Claudine Hellmuth's Studio Paints. (I love mixing paints but I'll be honest that it's a hit or miss as far as color shades goes.)  In the picture below you can see the outline of the stamp from my first layer (which was stamped on card stock, cut and glued to the page):

I also noticed that the green acrylic glaze kept showing through the paint so I added a bit of white gesso to my paint mix and applied several more coats.  At first I was careful about avoiding the facial stencil lines (mouth, nose, etc).  But I gave up on that rather quickly because I figured I'd just re-stencil those details once I had the skin completely painted and no green peeking through.

My next step was to add some shading (because of the white gesso she had turned out really pale) and add some color to her eyes and lips.

I used the black Big Brush Pen to "connect" the lines and also added another couple of layers of paint on her hair.  And then I did it..... I thought I'd really done it and ruined it all......because I wasn't thinking and outlined the face (stencil lines) with a black Faber-Castell Gelato and using my fingers to blend it.  Sigh, yup I gave her a mustache too:

BUT, after stepping away and looking at her, I realized that the smudges actually gave her more of a painterly look.  Now remember how I had said that in my previous attempts at completing this page, it just didn't "speak" to me?  Now it did..... I added a bit more shading with Faber-Castell markers and gelatos in the pinks,oranges and light browns, using a wet finger to blend.  For her cheek color, I used Distress Stain, again using my favorite tool - my fingers.

Having watched "Inspiration Wednesday" this week, I decided to use up some of my very old word stickers along with some current stickers which were covered with Matte Multi Medium to ensure they would stay put. Once dry, I went over the stickers with the black gelato and after blending it, added a couple of dabs of Black Soot Distress Paint, moving the paint with a wet wipe.

As a final touch I added circles from the Well Rounded stencil in red paint and using a mixture of old alphabet stickers as well as letters from Idea-ology's Label Letters as my title - sort of.  I honestly have no idea if "Jumbled" is even a word but like I tell my family at times.... "it's my world", right? 

Now, is this page finished?  For right now, it is. And as far as I'm concerned, one can never have too many layers!
