Get Altered Challenge - Spooning

Welcome to eclectic Paperie's 'Get  Altered  Challenge!

The Get Altered Challenge is held on the first Thursday of each month and each challenge is an opportunity for you to be inspired by one of our eTeam’s creations. This week it's my turn, Toni, and I'm challenging you to alter a spoon. It can be any kind of spoon, wooden, metal or even plastic!
I had a lot of fun hunting around our local junk shop and ended up with three spoons, the one I finally chose to alter is a  metal tablespoon. The first thing I did was to punch a hole in the end of the spoon bowl. I used a hammer with a metal punch and a block of wood. This was actually much easier  than I thought it would be. The main problem is in holding the end of the spoon flat against the wooden block. Once the hole was punched,  I  set about painting it. I started with a base coat of Studio Gesso, and then applied acrylic Paint Dabber in Juniper. I actually unscrewed the top and used a paint brush to apply the paint. I then gave the surface a coat of crackle medium before giving it a top coat of Antique linen Distress Paint.

I was very pleased with the way the paint crackled and revealed the colour below the top coat. I applied a little Vintage Photo Distress Stain over the surface to mellow the colour and enhance the cracks.
I used gel medium to make a photo transfer onto a Claudine Hellmuth, Sticky Backed Canvas ATC. I've been dying to do this since watching Julie's gel medium photo transfer video on the 'e Team Picks challenge' page. If you haven't seen it follow the link here. It's super easy to do and I just love the results. Now, the picture I used is actually a colour photo copy of a tinted photograph of my lovely late mum, when she was a little girl. It's one of my favourites and I've wanted to use it in a project for a while. I free cut the canvas transferred image into an oval shape and adhered it to the spoon with the excellent sticky backing! I then dotted around the edge with Cosmic Shimmer Specialist Pearl PVA Glue.

I added some Tim Holtz Remnant Rub Ons around the edge and along the handle. Like so many other crafters, I'm really loving these! I painted some small flowers from my stash with Distress Paint in a mixture of Antique Linen and Frayed Burlap and arranged them with a few punched out and heat embossed sprigs, at the side of the image. I adhered these to the spoon with more Gel Medium. I hadn't realized just how versatile this stuff is!

I attached a pearl dropper through the hole I punched and added stamped letters popped up, to spell the word 'love.'. I painted one of the key hole shapes from the  Tim Holtz Ideaology Locket Keys Collection, with Antique Linen Distress Paint and once dry, swiped on a bit of Vintage Photo Distress stain. I couldn't resist adding the gem as it was a perfect fit for the centre. A few pearls, some more Remnant Rub Ons, a little dyed ribbon bow and a  chain hanger complete the look. I actually adhered the gems and the metal with Matte Multi Medium and it's made a strong enough bond to support the spoon when it's hung up. I told you it was versatile!.

So that's  how I altered my spoon! I hope this might inspire you to find a spoon and get altering!

The Get Altered Challenge is about exploring your creative journey, about stepping outside of your comfort zone, experimenting with new products, and creating altered and mixed media art.
We want to see your work and hear about your inspiration!  All of those who play along with our challenge will be entered into a prize drawing for a $15.00 gift certificate to the eclectic Paperie store.
