ePlay Challenge–Wood!

eplaybutton

Welcome to the April ePlay Challenge. Our challenges are about encouraging you to explore your creative journey and inspiring you to step outside of your comfort zone.  When you submit your artwork, share a unique card, scrapbook or journal page, a canvas, home décor project, or anything that you’re excited to share!  We’re looking forward to crafting with you! One project will be chosen at the end of this month-long challenge and will be awarded a $25 shop voucher for the eclectic Paperie store. It just might be you!

Good morning!  Sherry here with you today and it’s my turn to host the ePlay Challenge this month, which is Wood!  I chose to alter a wood box, but wood could be anything from a small wood embellishment on the front of a card, a chunky ATC made from a scrap of 2x4, or an old cigar box.  The possibilities are endless!

While shopping in one of my favorite junk stores one day recently, I ran across a footed cedar box
very similar to the one below.

ePlay Unaltered Box

Of course, in my haste to get this project started, I failed to take a before picture of the box I actually used.  I can say, however, that the condition of the box was much the same as this one . . . mine did not have a latch on the front, but did have wood feet.

The box was painted with gesso first, then given a few coats of gray acrylic paint (inside and out).  Once thoroughly dry, the top and sides were skimmed with crackle embossing paste.  Another layer of gray paint was applied to the dried crackle embossing paste.

As a finishing touch to the crackle, linen acrylic paint was mixed with a staining and antiquing medium, which was applied and wiped off the gray finish.

The flowers are old Studio 490 Art Parts – Florals and Leaves, which were inked with Wendy Vecchi Signature Ranger Archival Inks in Dandelion, Cornflower Blue, Red Geranium and Fern Green.

Using backgrounds from some older Studio 490 sets, Optical Art, Art by the Number, It’s More Flower Art and Dimensional Rose Art, the Art Parts florals and leaves were stamped in Potting Soil.

As a final step, the box was sprayed with a workable fixative to set the antiquing as well as add a little shine to the Art Parts and finishes.

I hope you’ll play along with us this month and incorporate a bit of wood into your project.  If you do, please come back and link up your photo or blog post, using the linky tool below.
